Best News Story Of 2009

So far there is a clear frontrunner for my favorite news story of the year. What story is that? you might ask. Well, our friends at PETA (People who Engage in Trite Arguments) decided that it would be a good idea to dress up in KKK outfits and protest at, get this, the Westminster Dog Show in NYC.

In case this humor is lost on you or you find this a perfectly normal practice, let me flesh this out a bit. Ask any carpet cleaner how people feel about their pets. Family pets are treated better than family members. Let's be honest here. Molly can get away with murder and I can't get away with diddly squat. What is treated better than family pets? I can only think of one thing: show dogs. Holy cow do these dogs live the life. Travel in first class, eat expensive meals, combed and groomed and bathed all the time, manis and pedis everyday, etc.

Why would PETA choose to protest this? You guessed it, inbreeding. They say that inbreeding is practiced to get pure bred show dogs and that many of them are deaf, blind, and have epilepsy. What? Are you serious? So, because breeders selectively breed two dogs they are equated with the KKK? Little bit of a stretch, but I can see the point. This is just funny. I have never heard of a show dog that is a deaf epileptic. PETA's evidence on that is anecdotal at best. No dog and no human is treated as well (or shall we say, ethically) as show dogs. What is the problem here people?

Well, it seems that activist groups have gone off the deep end. If this is a trend, here are some future stories that we can expect:

The Sierra Club protests that recycling plants emit too much CO2

Focus on the Family protests that too much prayer in school keeps kids from learning family values

The Heritage Foundation protests that Ronald Reagan's name is used too often and is a distraction to the conservative movement

Al Sharpton gathers a group to fight free speech by calling satire "racism" (oh wait, this one happened already)

ACORN protests illegals getting to vote because it diminishes the impact of dead people and Disney characters they register

Rush Limbaugh fights for the Fairness Doctrine just because Obama is against it

UAW workers vote against bailout to keep automakers in business because then they have to go to work to make money, which is very un-UAW

Democrats criticize Republican leadership because of reckless spending and pandering to special interest groups (oh, this one happened as well)

Until these events happen, I will be scouring the papers anxiously awaiting another stupid activist group to do something stupidly stupid.

Al Gore and his group must be thinking about a protest of all retail outlets that sell bathing suits because it is celebrating global warming and our eventual demise.

right now darwin is, somewhere, rolling in his grave.

i'm pretty sure that peta takes issue with the "culling" that is an inevitable result of inbreeding. you are absoutely right, show dogs are superb specimens - not deaf and epileptic. it is their shallow-end-of-the-gene-pool siblings that get the raw end of the deal.

that said, bring on the global warming! i'm sick of this 20 degree weather.

I know what you mean, i blog, that is why we adopted Molly. She was a stray mutt. We have no idea what breed she is. But, I did not want to pay $1000 to get a disease-prone inbred dog. But, there have to be bigger battles to fight. Dog breeding is not going to stop and it apparently only angers PETA and Bob Barker. I also think this satisfies Mr. Darwin because the shallow-end-of-the-gene-pool dogs you talk about are unfit and probably will not be reproducing. The healthy, pretty, winners are bred. So I guess Darwin AND Nazi Germany are happy about this
